COURSE OVERVIEW

The course will focus on contemporary Hatha yoga taught through vinyasa.

This course is designed to provide you with a toolbox to become a successful and effective yoga teacher.


You will learn teaching methodology, and the different approaches you can take to effectively communicate the complex ideas that make up Modern Yoga.

A large portion of the course will be devoted to understanding foundational yoga postures - including variations & modifications. By the end of the course you will have learnt how to teach a led yoga class that is suitable for beginners, as well as how to create sequences that will be suitable for multi-level practitioners.

There will be modules on the history of yoga and the development of the yoga tradition, as well as the basics of Sanskrit in relation to its practical application in teaching yoga.

The course material will be taught through lectures, asana workshops, experiential classes, teaching practice, group work and homework.

The practicalities of teaching will include how to teach and make the best use of your voice and give effective verbal cues, when and how to make hands on adjustments to meet the needs of the different students, and the basic skills of business and marketing as they relate to the yoga industry.

This is a training will take place mainly on weekend and be completed over an eight-month period at The Yoga Quarter, a studio in North London.

SYLLABUS

Asana – including sun salutations, standing and seated postures from a variety of traditions, and the closing postures from the Ashtanga vinyasa sequence, as well as an introduction to restorative poses. Understanding popular and traditional alignment, how to modify postures to make them inclusive and accessible to a wide range of practitioner.


Pranayama – starting with breath awareness, the foundation of a yoga asana practice, and encompassing other breathing techniques, how to incorporate them into a personal practice as well as a class setting.


Meditation - beginning a foundational meditation practice, the different kinds of meditation practices and how they might be relevant to the practice of modern postural yoga.


Yoga history & philosophy - covering some of the key texts of the yoga tradition, classical yoga, and the emergence of Hatha yoga and its influence on the modern yoga that is taught today.


Anatomy and physiology – covering both the functional anatomy of the physical body in movement, and the energetic anatomy of the subtle body. Students will develop an understanding of how individual anatomy relates to yoga postures, and the effects of yoga as an exercise modality, both in terms of benefits and limitations.


Sequencing – students will learn a set sequence that they can teach straight away or adapt, as well as understanding different sequencing techniques and how to structure a practice for a wide variety of different outcomes.


Adjustments - learn different approaches to assisting and adjusting, understanding the value of touch and how to use it help students understand asana better.


Yoga as a business - discussion on how to earn a living teaching yoga, the different types of business you can start as a yoga teacher, yoga on zoom and the use of social media, as well as discussions on contemporary topics such as diversity and inclusion.
